What are the hazards of oily wastewater if not treated?

Oily wastewater mainly comes from petroleum, petrochemical, iron and steel, coking, gas generating stations, mechanical processing and other industrial sectors.  The relative densities of oil pollutants in wastewater are all less than 1 except that of heavy tar which is above 1.1.

Oily wastewater has adverse effects on human beings, animals, plants and even the whole ecosystem, which is mainly manifested in the following two aspects:

1. Harm to enterprises.  Wastewater containing emulsified oil will settle together with suspended particles and oxide iron sheet in wastewater in process facilities and pipeline equipment, forming oily sludge with large viscosity, which will block pipelines and equipment and affect the normal progress of production.

2. Harm to the environment.  Oil material impact on the environment are various, such as polluted water, the oil film is formed on the surface, can prevent water after oxygen effect, because of the dissolved oxygen in water, the algae photosynthesis is restricted, affect aquatic organisms normal growth, make the aquatic animals and plants have oil or toxicity, and smell of water, destruction of water resources utilization value;  The oil adheres to the gills of fish, which can suffocate the fish. When the concentration is 200mg/L, the fish cannot survive.  Cling to algae, plankton, can make them die;  Oil will inhibit waterfowl egg laying and hatching, severe bird death;  With oily waste water irrigation farmland, will cover the surface of the soil and plant oil and its derivatives, clogging of soil pore, prevent air penetration, soil and microorganisms can't normal metabolism, make the agricultural products quality and practical value to drop, caused serious, crops or death of oil in the soil downward migration, may also cause serious groundwater pollution.

In conclusion, the pollution of oily wastewater may cause devastating damage to the ecosystem and potential harm to human health.
